Roman Sunset
Watercolour on paper · quarter- to half-sheet format
Rose-coloured light fills this Roman street scene. A domed building rises over the façades while a dark lantern and shaded foreground give the view its depth.
Small figures and glimpses of the street keep the architecture connected to everyday life. Warm and cool washes shift across the buildings without closing down their edges.
LOOKING CLOSER
Evening colour in the city
The dark lantern sets a foreground accent against the luminous sky. Loosely joined washes connect the dome, street and façades, with sharper marks guiding the eye through the scene.
