Boat Watching in Venice

Boat Watching in Venice watercolour by Robert Scholten

Boat Watching in Venice
Watercolour on paper · quarter- to half-sheet format

Boats rest beneath a stone bridge in this Venice watercolour. Warm architectural washes meet cool reflections, while figures on the bridge and a distant tower draw the eye into the scene.

Dark foreground shapes give the canal depth. Broken reflections and loose edges keep the water moving beneath the more solid rhythm of the buildings.

LOOKING CLOSER

Light across the canal

The bridge connects the two sides of the canal. Small figures and moored boats bring a human scale to the architecture, while the paper’s light remains visible through the washes.
