OLD TOWN LIGHT — BARI

Weathered stone, winding streets and southern light

Painted on location in Bari Vecchia, this watercolour follows the old town’s winding streets through weathered stone, compressed buildings and sudden passages of light.

The composition is organised around the meeting of sun and shadow. Rather than record every façade, I used connected value shapes to hold the street together, adding figures and smaller architectural marks only where they sharpen the sense of scale and movement.

PAINTING ON LOCATION

Letting the immediate conditions shape the image

Working directly in the street keeps the painting responsive. Wash timing, changing light and the movement of people all become part of the finished image, preserving the immediacy of the encounter rather than smoothing it away later.

THE STREET BECOMES CLEARER WHEN SOME OF IT IS LEFT UNSAID.
