Rouen, Palermo and Burano: Architecture at a Human Scale

·

Rouen Street — watercolour by Robert Scholten

Buildings establish the setting in these watercolours, but the smaller signs of daily life give each scene its character. Rouen Street, Palermo Cafe Life and Burano Scene bring attention to the point where architecture meets people: a pavement, a cafe terrace and a bridge over a canal.

Rouen: the street as a passage

Rouen Street places a dark building edge close to the viewer. Beyond it, warm facades and a line of pedestrians lead into the scene. The contrast between the near shadow and the lighter street gives the image depth. The figures are small, but their presence helps us read the height and spacing of the surrounding buildings.

Palermo: a facade above the cafe

In Palermo Cafe Life, pale walls, balconies and a street lamp occupy the upper part of the painting. Red umbrellas gather the activity below into a concentrated band of colour. The contrast connects two scales: the repeated architectural details overhead and the more compact gathering at street level.

Burano: a crossing and a reflection

Burano Scene opens the view across a canal. A small bridge links the banks, while warm and cool facades frame the water. Figures on the edges of the canal establish scale without becoming portraits. The broken marks in the water create a different rhythm from the more upright shapes of the buildings.

Reading the city through small details

These works can be read as architectural views, but the passages, umbrellas and crossing places keep them connected to daily use. When looking closely, follow the routes a person might take through each scene. That route often provides a second composition within the larger arrangement of buildings.
